Atlantic Herring - Iceland

Iceland was the last European country to be “discovered.” Evidence points to the first human settlement of Iceland occurring between 770 and 880. Celtic monks may have been the first to arrive, but either abandoned their colony or were displaced when Scandinavians began arriving on the island after 874.

Clupea harengus - The Atlantic herring is found on both sides of the North Atlantic. Over-fishing in the 1960’s resulted in a catastrophic plunge of population, but international agreements have stabilized the Atlantic herring numbers. It is the fourth most fished species in the world and there are concerns it may have only received a temporary stay from succumbing to over-fishing. Herrings school in huge numbers and prefer feeding no deeper than 200 meters. These characteristics make them an easy catch for fishing trawlers.
