Common Bottlenose Dolphin - Bahrain

The nation of Bahrain consists of several islands located in the Persian Gulf. The island of Bahrain, the largest of the archipelago, is connected to Saudi Arabia through the King Fahd Causeway. Construction on the 25 kilometers of bridges and elevated causeways began in 1981 and was completed in 1986.

Tursiops truncatus - Except for the polar regions, the common bottlenose dolphin is found throughout the world. Locally, they travel in pods of 10 to 15 individuals, but can aggregate to form large groups exceeding several hundred individuals when migrating over long distances. Their diet consists of squid, eels, shrimp, and fish from the pelagic zone; pelagic describes an open sea area.  Although bottlenose dolphins have teeth, they swallow their food whole; the teeth help to keep food in the mouth, preventing it from escaping.

Rough-toothed Dolphin - Anguilla

Having been part of the Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla colony, the people of Anguilla declared their island as an independent republic in an attempt to gain a degree of self-government from the larger island of Saint Christopher. The “nation” existed from 1967 until 1969, but was never formally recognized by any other country.

Steno bredanensis - Rough-toothed dolphins are distinct from other species of dolphins: their flippers are set further back and they lack the typical melon-shaped bulge on their forehead. As their name implies, the surface of their teeth has rough ridges, another unusual feature. Rough-toothed dolphins are found beyond the continental shelves of the temperate and tropical waters of the world. Permanent groups of 2 to 8  individuals are typical, but they do come together on occasion to form pods numbering over 100 animals.

Stenella longirostris - The spinner dolphin is a small dolphin inhabiting the warm tropical waters throughout most of the world. Adults average from 130 to 230 centimeters in length and weigh between 23 to 79 kilos. Their dorsal area is dark grey, flanks are light grey, and the underside is white; coloration does vary regionally. Mating occurs year-round with a gestation period of 10 months, typical of most dolphins. Breeding intervals are usually three years apart; females begin their first mating season at about 7 years of age.
