Three small islands: Sand, Eastern, and Spit form the Midway Atoll, the northwestern end of the Hawaiian Archipelago. Originally known as the Middlebrook Islands, the name was slowly replaced to reflect the atoll’s geographic location, midway between the North American and Asian continents.

Ipomea pes-caprae - Seeds of the beach morning glory are able to float along the oceans without suffering any harmful effect from salt water. This unique characteristic has allowed the plant to spread to the sandy shores throughout the tropical regions of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. Able to endure salty environments, beach morning glory is one of the first plants to take root along beach dunes. Long runners, taking root at the nodes, spread towards the toe of the dune and serve as a sand stabilizer.
