Chelydra serpentina - Common snapping turtles are found from Southern Canada to Florida and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains. When threatened in their natural watery environment, snapping turtles slip away quietly, but they are aggressive when confronted out of the water. The turtle’s head is too large to fully retract into the shell and has made it necessary to adapt an aggressive defense when threatened. It usually hisses before it bites. The powerful jaws and sharp beak can deliver a painful bite to any intruder.
