Cranberries - Wisconsin


The Wisconsin Territory was a large tract of land organized in July of 1836. The territory was eventually divided to form parts of five states: Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Becoming a state in 1848, Wisconsin is one of four states with its capital named in honor of an American president.

Vaccinium macrocarpon - Cranberries are the fruit of small evergreen shrubs or creeping vines. There are four species of cranberries and they are confined to the cooler regions of the northern hemisphere. The berries are white in color, but begin to turn dark red as they ripen. Cranberries were used by Native Americans as a food source and as a dye. It was an important food item carried by New England sailors to prevent scurvy. Cranberries are primarily made into juices, but other uses include turning them into jams and sauces.
