This bird winters in Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Gulf Coast area. The males are blue on the upper surface, with a russet breast, a white throat, and a white belly; females have duller coloration. Bluebirds are gregarious and will form large flocks when foraging during the winter, but will become territorial when guarding their nesting site or food sources during the breeding season.
