Loggerhead Turtle - South Carolina

The Carolinas began as one large colony stretching from the Atlantic coast to as far west as modern day Tennessee. The crown colony was separated into two entities in 1719. South Carolina was the first American colony to proclaim its independence from Great Britain and it was the first southern state to secede from the Union.

Caretta caretta - Loggerhead turtles are oceanic turtles and found throughout the world. The average length and weight is 90 centimeters and 135 kilos respectively. After mating, females will return to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs. They will come ashore at night to scoop out a chamber above the high tide line and fill the nest with as many as 100 eggs. The female will cover the nest and return to the sea. The hatchlings will emerge from the sand in about 80 days, also at night, and are instinctively drawn to the sea.
