Red Lion Fish - Guam

Guam is the largest and southern most island of the Mariana Islands. The Chamorro people were the first inhabitants of the area, arriving about 4,000 years ago. Guam was under Spanish control from 1565 until 1898, when it was ceded to the United States following the Spanish American War.

Pterois volitans - Red lion fish are found along the coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The red and white bands serves as a means of camouflage as the lion fish lurks in ambush among the corals waiting for small fish, shrimp or crab to pass by. The long spines are venomous and serve as a warning for any potential predator to stay away. The red lion fish is a solitary animal and only comes together with others during the mating season; the male will usually collect two females into his “harem.”
