Walleye - Minnesota

Minnesota has the distinction of having two enclaves: Elm Point and the Northwest Angle. These areas are attached to Canada and separated from the Minnesota mainland by water. Unless arriving by boat, it is necessary to pass from the United States into Canada and back into the United States when traveling to either location.

Sander vitreus - The walleye is native to the fresh waters of Canada and the Northern United States. They grow to about 80 centimeters and weigh up to 9 kilos. Spawning occurs in late winter or early spring. The female is capable of depositing over 500,000 eggs. There is no parental care for the eggs when they are laid or when the fry hatch. The hatching is temperature reliant and occurs from 15 to 30 days. The fry rely on their attached yolk for food before taking insect larvae. Adult walleyes are piscivorous, the feed on other fish.
