Longfin Bannerfish - Seychelles

The Seychelles consists of an archipelago of over 100 islands spread over an wide area in the Indian Ocean. In population and land area, it is Africa’s smallest country. Pirates had used the islands as staging areas for planning raids or as havens of refuge until the French took control of the archipelago in 1756.

Heniochus acuminatus - The body of the longfin bannerfish consists of 5 broad vertical black and white stripes; it has bright yellow anal, caudal, and pectoral fins. Bannerfish are passive and social in behavior. They feed primarily on plankton and will occasionally take on the role of “cleaners” by picking parasites off other fish; a trait usually found in juveniles. Longfin bannerfish tend to travel in pairs during the breeding season, but do merge together with others to temporarily form larger groups rarely exceeding 50 individuals.
