African Pitta - Gabon

Pitta angolensis - The African pitta forages along leaf litter by scratching up the debris in search of insects and mollusks. There are three recognized subspecies with some, depending on region, being migratory. The pitta is a small bird, ranging in size from 18 to 20 centimeters in height. It tends to be an elusive bird, not easily spotted despite the bright green and red plumage. They do have a loud call, but it is reserved for the breeding season; the season runs from November to December.

The Kingdom of Orungu was a state located in present day Gabon and existed from 1700 until 1927. The kingdom took advantage of its strategic position along the shipping routes used by European explorers in conducting a lucrative business in the ivory and trans-Atlantic slave industry. The kingdom fell into decline with the abolishment of the slave market. In 1873, King Ntchengué allowed the French to establish a concession in the kingdom. By 1927, France had absorbed the entire area as a colony.
