Morus bassanus - Northern gannets are common on both sides of the North Atlantic. The first winter migration can be an arduous trek, but subsequent migrations are shorter, usually no more than 1,500 kilometers. Males stake out and vigorously defend their nesting site; high coastal cliffs are preferred locations because they are easy to defend. Breeding pairs stay monogamous for several seasons and sometimes for life. Gannets are high-speed divers, able to strike their target at speeds of 100 km/h with remarkable accuracy.
