Southern Hawker - Guernsey

The Bailiwick of Guernsey, a dependency of the British Crown, consists of the islands of Alderney, Guernsey, Herm, and Sark. It is one of two dependencies in the Channel Islands archipelago; the other is Jersey. Guernsey remained under British control when France ousted England from the European mainland in 1204.

Aeshna cyanea - The southern hawker or blue hawker is a common dragonfly found throughout Europe. The length of an adult ranges from 60 to 75 millimeters and consists of a large black body with green and yellow markings; males have blue spotting along their abdomen. Females deposit their eggs into rotting vegetation near ponds or slow moving water in summer or autumn; the eggs hatch the following spring. The developing larvae will feed on small tadpoles and other invertebrates until fully emerging as adults in two to three years.
