European Bison - Poland

Among the thousands of carved objects dating from the last European ice age, the most remarkable is a piece of mammoth tusk found in a cave near Obkzowa, Poland. It is thought to be the world’s oldest boomerang. With a span of 67 centimeters, this weapon could be accurately thrown for 195 meters.

Bison bonasus - The North American and the European bison are the two remaining species of bison. Both have almost been hunted into extinction. The last wild European bison, also known as the wisent, was killed in the early 20th century. Fewer than 50 animals remained in zoos or were held in private reserves. This dwindling stock served as the basis for rebuilding and reintroducing the animal to its former range. Approximately 5,000 European bison are in existence; 2,700 are able to freely roam in established herds.
