Great Grey Owl - Finland

Finland has more islands than any other country; Indonesia ranks second. They range in size from unnamed islets of a few square meters to Soisalo, an island featuring 1,638 square kilometers and the largest freshwater island in Europe. Most of Finland’s islands were formed by retreating glaciers during the last ice age.

Strix nebulosa - In length, the great grey owl is the largest owl in the world. It has a wingspan reaching 152 centimeters. As with most owl species, the female is slightly larger than the male. Owls usually have large facial disks called ruffs. This feature acts as a radar and allows the bird to collect sounds. The placement and size of the eyes combined with large talons make the great grey owl a formidable predator. The diet for the great grey owl varies by region, but primarily consists of small rodents, with voles topping the list.
