Iris germanica - The German iris, also referred to as the bearded iris, is a rhizomatous perennial. Rhizomatous plants describe flowering plants with a modified subterranean stem system. This feature is also called a rootstalk and is used by the plant to store nutrients. The rootstalk will generate new plants if separated. The German iris is a cultivated hybrid originating from Europe; it is not a wild species of plant. There are approximately 300 species of iris plants in the family Iridaceae, Greek for “rainbow.”
