Started as a cultural movement in Florence, Italy during the 13th century, the European Renaissance felt a tremendous surge with Johannes Gutenberg’s advanced printing methods. He built an improved press, was the first to use oil-based inks, and designed a moveable type made from lead, tin, and antimony. By 1500, Gutenberg’s ideas had spread beyond his small shop in Mainz; he created a new industry spawning hundreds of print shops capable of producing millions of books for an eager public hungry for knowledge.
