Anguilla anguilla - The European eel is catadromous; born in salt water, but living most of its life in fresh water. The life cycle of the eel starts in the Sargasso Sea, an area in the Western Atlantic Ocean, where it is born. It begins a three year journey to Europe by drifting across the Atlantic in a larva stage. When it reaches the other end of the Atlantic, the eel swims into the rivers and streams throughout Europe. It returns to the Sargasso Sea 6 to 20 years later to renew the cycle. European eels have a life span extending to 80 years.
